Why the Cal 25?

The Cal 25 remains one of the most accessible pathways into racing on the Chesapeake. These boats may lack the flash of newer builds, but they reward seamanship and teamwork, offering pure, tactical racing at a cost that welcomes newcomers. Many of us had our first taste of the fleet as complete beginners, only to find ourselves hooked by the challenge, the camaraderie, and the undeniable charm of a classic boat that still delivers.

What we do

Today, the Chesapeake Bay Cal 25 Association is focused on strengthening the fleet and inviting the next generation of sailors to join us. Our boats may be spread across creeks and coves, but when the starting sequence begins, they still show up—and we want new captains and curious crew on that line with us. If you’ve ever thought about racing, restoring, or simply learning the ropes on a classic one-design, now is the perfect time. The tradition is strong, the community is ready, and the Chesapeake is calling.

The Chesapeake Bay Cal 25 Association exists to carry forward one of the Bay’s most enduring one-design traditions. Since the fleet first organized in 1968, Cal 25s have lined up on these waters season after season—proof that smart design, solid construction, and a passionate community can outlast trends by decades. What began as a scrappy group of sailors racing affordable, sturdy little boats has grown into a multigenerational fleet woven into the fabric of Annapolis sailing.

Much of that legacy lives in the people who kept the class alive: generous skippers, patient teachers, and legends like Charlie Husar, whose devotion to the fleet helped shepherd dozens of boats and new owners into the class. That spirit—competitive on the racecourse, welcoming on the docks—still defines the fleet today. Whether you’re climbing aboard for your first start or returning to a boat you’ve loved for years, you’ll find a culture built on showing up, learning, sharing parts, and helping each other get faster.
